Our Story

In the summer of 2020, we made the decision to reinvest in the manufacturing of our Turning and Milling products in the United States, pivoting from 20 years of producing these same products in Taiwan. The decision to re-shore the building of these machines to our facility in Elmira, NY is one that grew from both desire and necessity.

The past 18 months have been painful for businesses as they coped with unplanned shutdowns, labor shortages, and changing government regulations. Perhaps the biggest challenge has been disrupted global commerce and supply chains which have caused price increases and shortages of household items, semiconductor chips, and more. As a machine tool builder, we are both a customer of and supplier to the greater manufacturing supply chain and felt it was necessary to remove the vulnerabilities brought on by overseas sourcing to better serve our customers.

In addition to maintaining better control of the supply of our critical materials, manufacturing in the US assists in our desire to provide high quality machine tools in custom configurations to the US and European markets all while reducing lead times. Building this equipment under the same roof as our Super-Precision lathes enables us to utilize the same manufacturing and assembly processes historically reserved for these industry leading turning centers. Being closer to the US and European markets allows our engineers to develop equipment specifically geared toward the demands of those regions and brings us closer to the customer. Yet the flexibility this onshoring initiative provides doesn’t just stop at the design and build of the product, but also allows us to deliver machines quickly to the customer by reducing lengthy and oftentimes unreliable ocean freight.

While these and many additional positive opportunities helped shape our decision to bring this product back to the US, it was our 130-year commitment to American Manufacturing that ultimately made it an easy one.

American manufacturing is investing in its future – and so are we

The American manufacturing sector is bouncing back as companies build up local production capacity to overcome supply bottlenecks and meet surging consumer demand. Business publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Industry Today are heralding the “American Manufacturing Renaissance,” as U.S. manufacturers hire new workers and invest in plant expansion/modernization, automation, and new digital technologies. This shift can shorten production lead times and deliver the higher-performing products needed for American markets.

This means there’s never been a better time to join Hardinge, one of the world’s leading providers of high-precision, computer-controlled machine tool solutions. We’re reinventing the company with a broad new product portfolio, a forward-looking global leadership team, and a focus on innovative industries and applications. We’re growing fast and looking for smart go-getters eager to work on the latest innovations in CNC machinery for high-tech manufacturing. We welcome those with fresh perspectives and a desire to make a difference.
